Download Festival 2012 review

Since ordering my ticket to Download festival I wished I could afford a weekend ticket, but arriving on Saturday morning to cars getting stuck in the mud and sinking with every step I took I was kind of relieved.

Trivium

Trivium were the first band I saw, although I hadn’t really listened to them since the last time I saw them at Download festival in 2009I have to admit they have made me a fan once again as the performance was much better than last time in my opinion. Matt asked for seven circle pits but got ‘more than he could count’ so I think the band went down well with the rest of the crowd too.

Steel Panther

Next on main stage were Steel Panther, and again, I have seen this band before at Download festival in 2010, so I knew what I was letting myself in for. I saw plenty of glam rock wigs, inflatable guitars and leopard print in the crowd to be assured that the band were well anticipated. At one point an aeroplane flew over the field and Steel Panther managed to get everyone to swear at it. With the amount of people shouting, I’m pretty sure they would have heard us. As always the band were cracking jokes between their already comical songs and got the whole field in good spirits for the rest of the day.

Acoda

After seeing most of Steel Panther’s set, I ran to the Red Bull Bedroom Jam stage to see an upcoming band; Acoda. I was fascinated by the guitarist’s ability to head bang without losing his glasses! The tent was almost packed out and I could see a circle pit which is always a good sign. I think I will be seeing a lot more of this band in the future.

Tenacious D

After Acoda it was back to main stage to see a band I’ve always wanted to see. I’ve always been a huge Jack Black fan and have listened to this band since I was in primary school, so seeing Tenacious D live was a dream come true. Of course they were funny from start to finish, arriving on stage in big fur coats and standing in front of a huge bird that resembled something else… Jack Black pointed out a variety of food stands, focusing mainly on the noodle bars that he would be sampling later. He also got his phone out and took a photo of the crowd saying ‘I’ll text you it later’. Tenacious D were so interactive with the crowd and sounded just as good live as recorded. I cannot find one fault with their performance and I think they were the winning band of the day for me.

Biffy Clyro

This was my third time seeing Biffy Clyro and I was just as amazed as the first time I saw them. Simon wore a smart white shirt and trouser combo with black converse, proving the backstage area was not muddy at all. They played most songs from Only Revolutions, and the crowd seemed to know the words to every song (Except for a new song from the upcoming album). I was impressed with how they stayed so in sync even on the songs with more difficult timing such as ‘That golden rule’. As always the band had a lot of props such as smoke and flares which are always a nice touch showing that they really care about the performance. The only bad thing I have to say is that I wish they’d get rid of the mic cams. They are just too close to their faces, and look kind of awkward.

Metallica

Headlining the day, everyone was present for this band. There was a mixture of songs to satisfy everyone. They played upbeat songs to get everyone jumping, and slow songs to get everyone swaying with lighters in the air. There were fireworks, fire and ‘Metallica’ balls released into the crowd which after being thrown around a bit was grabbed by people who ran for their lives with it. Metallica used the stage well and really showed their appreciation to their fans. They kept on playing, even though they went over their time they stayed to play more just like their fans asked. Even as people started to leave James Hetfield was still on the mic thanking everyone. They were definitely a well-chosen headliner.

Live at Leeds 2012, 4th – 7th May

This Is Ark writer Hannah Bulmer tells us how the Live at Leeds 2012 line up proved to be the best yet…

#LAL2012

Live at Leeds 2012

When Live at Leeds 2012 approached it’s an understatement to say I was a little excited. With top class acts such as The Enemy, Marina & the Diamonds and Los Campesinos! featuring on the line-up as well as the prospect of discovering a few new ones, it would be hard not to. This feeling however was later replaced with that of confusing and a little stress when realising that I had failed to remember the problem which accompanies any good festival – a serious case of clashing acts. Don’t get me wrong; as a serial festival goer I love the great choices that are always on offer, but this time it just got a bit silly; especially those after 9pm when I’d never wished more for the ability to teleport. Somehow though I got through the day with minimal disappointment for the acts I was unfortunate to miss.

Jessie Ware

Jessie Ware

Conceding to the inevitable fact that our feet may hurt a little by the end of the day from briskly trekking between each venue to avoid missing our faves, we started the day at the Leeds 02 Academy with Jessie Ware. Knowing her only from her involvement in ‘SBTRKT’ tracks I was glad to find that she was as good solo as she is in her collaborations. Obviously humbled by the great level of fans she received the performance demonstrated a promising future for the singer especially the single ‘110%’ which is my personal favourite.

Sound of Guns

Sound of Guns

Another highlight of my day was discovering Sound of Guns at The Wardrobe , where the Liverpudlian group surely couldn’t have wished for a better crowd, creating an atmosphere which could be described as nothing less but enthusiastically rowdy. Definitely a band which is creeping up in popularity and from the look at their extensive list of live and festival dates booked for the summer we’ll be seeing a lot more of them!

The Subways

The Subways

After catching the beautiful Josh Kumra in an extremely intimate yet stunning set in Cockpit 3; I was lucky enough to get to the main room at the venue in time to see the end ofThe Subways’. From the countless crowd surfing to stage invasions hour set left the crowd in the palm of their hands. Possibly my favourite thing about them was how they refrained from the generic fake ending, lead singer Billy Lunn telling us that he ‘couldn’t be bothered and instead dived straight into ‘It’s a Party’. Amazing.

So despite the considerably sore feet and head I woke up with the next day, Live at Leeds 2012 couldn’t have gone better. Here’s to next year
